Ice thickness

Post by MK »

We've had a remarkable and thrilling early beginning to our snowkite season. Several posts, texts, calls and additional social media inquiries. It's worth asking the questions and best to check with the local bait shop to get most up-to-date answers. If you happen to have an ice report feel free to chime in. Looks like riders have been out for a few weeks now at various locations. Here's a news piece from Sunday: http://minnesota.cbslocal.com/2014/11/2 ... in-cities/

Here it is the ice report for Wayzata bay I fished Tuesday and Wed. I was kiting Tuesday on 5-7 inches of ice. There is patches of glare ice and snow I still had a blast getting out on the bay and flying around. Just remember there is no safe ice ever so be safe and check the ice when going somewhere new. I did not go outside of the bay into the main lake.

Four of us were all over Medicine lake from 3-6pm. I asked the few fisherman there and they all said easily 6"+. Well stated about ice safety and thanks for the report. A smooth layer about 1-2" of snow covers 98% of Medicine lake. Great for skates, switchblade, or skis. Wonderful riding into the moonlight this evening. I hope this will end up being a bonus moon riding opportunity with a long snowkite season.

Duluth partial report:

Wild Rice Lake - 10-15" as of 12/7. Lots of cars, pickups, and permanent houses on the ice. Poor snow cover but solid ice all around.

Harbor at the Park Point Sailing School - 8" as of 12/8. The ice sheet was separated at the shoreline making the rowing club rough, but once on the ice (bridges at the sailing school) it was great. No vehicles but lots of fisherman and a few permanent houses.
