Need a lil info about milly

Post by jjmarks2001us »

I have kited for 4-5 years now on snow and land but I want to go try milly water kiting. I have a 12m x-bow and a 135 Best balsa. I'm just wondering if I head up in week or so, could someone teach me some body drag technique and self rescue.

I think you will find most everyone willing to help with giving advice and additional tips they have picked up. Last Saturday at Milly there were a couple guys that were pretty new to kiting at the same level you are at, so if you make the trip up you could most likely buddy up with someone at your level.
Finding someone to launch and catch your kite should be no problem. Tripple check your lines and have them walked out and be ready to go before asking will serve you well. There are some good video's out on utube and other sources to help you get a understanding of what you should practice. I can certainly help you on any questions you have with your Cabrinha kite. This weekend should be good at Milly assuming the lil flying things havnt hatched yet. Just let the people on the beach know your situation, go way upwind or downwind of everyone and work on your skills!

If you head to Mille and you're not comfortably riding yet, I would highly recommend Malmo over Reddy for S and SW winds. These winds are directly onshore and can be quite dangerous until you're more experienced. Besides even if you walk to the end of the sand bar your body drag will be quite shore lived. There will also be a lot less traffic (kites and swimmers) at Malmo, reducing the chance of injury.

The shallows at Malmo extend about 1/4 mile from shore and downwind for at least 3 miles. Plenty of room to safely body drag, work on skills, etc.

If you're looking for pointers you could always swing by Reddy on your way to Malmo and talk to experienced riders. If I'm hanging on shore, I'd be more than willing to go over the basics with you.

If Mike or Chad of Lakawa School of Kiteboarding are up there, you may be able to join a class or get some advice. Contact them at 612.296.3201
