It was an epic day up here in the northland! Jeff and I showed up at 22nd st at 1:00 to sunny skies, some massive surf and huge areas of butter smooth flatwater near the shore. We quickly made it out on the water to find 6+ foot breakers at the edge that were just daunting to be charging towards as they would start curling over… they were the biggest waves I’ve been in so far this season, and If I remember correctly bigger that anything I saw last season! They definitely started to calm down quickly as the day wore on, but it was kind of a relief since it was getting spooky at the edge of the break. It’s always kind of spooky when you lose your board in the big breakers, never know what’s going to hit you next, or if your board is going to catch a wave and come hurling toward you… I got on a huge wave on the outside, started accelerating… hit the trough… and boom, stuffed the nose of my board! I quickly realized I had to stand on the tail to keep that from happening again since the waves were so steep!
About an hour into it Dave showed up and hit the water… after heeding my warning to stay on the inside of the break! Dave was ripping it up today cursing well upwind and smashing through the mid break! Then Brian showed and started shredding the waves on his new board… but he rigged a 12 and seemed to be a little underpowered.
All in all it was beautiful, prefect day to be a Duluth local! I was able to ride for 4 hours before my body was done, and couldn’t take any more abuse! So I handed my 14 off to Brian and hit the road…
On another note… I have been having a lot of knee pain when I leave the water… I remember hearing a few people talking about some great joint supplements… what was that stuff called?

It's good to hear that someone is getting up there (or already there) to kill it. Looking forward to seeing Mother again.
You want to take Glucosamine. A couple of Horse Pills a day. Hard to remember to take 'em, because you are generally able to walk again when you have not just gotten off the lake. I am probably not the only guy who has arthritis in my knees, and that's what they say to take (and the magic beans: ibuprophen).

glucosamine, chondroitin, msm and omega oils are good for joint strength. Unfortunately, it's not a quick fix. It takes months of regular usage and getting a good quality source for it to work it's magic.
I've noticed the same thing and will probably end up getting a softer board to cushion those landings a little more when I feel beat up.

Jon, That was epic. Kind of had my tail between my legs when I first tried to get out. Once I did it was amazing to be on the outside and dodge the big waves. Crazy when you hear a roar behind you and realize that you just about got crushed. It was a great first session up there! Yep do the Omega-3 and glucosamine. They've been helping my old climbing tendons and joints for a long time now. For the omega-3 go with a cold-pressed flax seed oil.
