What a day! You're right Tom, the ice was perfection. Scary infact. We scoped it out and it was probably 3-4 inches. There were some duck holes that were perectly clear that we stayed away from, well almost, Sandell managed to go over a few while looking back at us after making a pass.
Hard to tell you all how good it was. I kept singing a Foo Fighter song in my head over and over, all day, with the lines
<pre>
and I wonder
when I sing along with you
If everything could ever feel this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again
the only thing I'll ever ask of you
you've got to promise not to stop when I say when
She sang

Sandell got the fastest man of the day award. He had the smallest sail (3.4) but was able to alway pass me by at least 10mph. He'd sneek up on you like a Great White just upwind and behind you, then drop down on you and brush his boom on your back as he passed you, stealing your wind. That really interupted my singing to myself as I almost jumped out of my skin when it happened, over and over.
Gorton get's the nod for the best looking speed jibes for the day. I dont' know how they do it, finding just the right time and angle so he doesn't get backwinded off the board. I wish I had some film of him, he's really getting low and forward just GOING for it. RAD!!!
Jason was out on some skates with a Little Devil looking powered. The skates were making alot of shavings fly around during his turns but I couldn't quite capture them on film.
Lars came out and kite skated and did some riding on the ice boards too. I think he had a good time flying around. At least that's what his smile said.
And Todd showed up with a cool ass contraption for his snowboard. He's easily able to hold edge and make nice turns on black ice. OK skiers, you just lost your dominance AGAIN with the kite on ice BWHWHWHHAHHHAAHAHAHAH!!!!
Snowboardz rulez
I reposted some if Jasons pictures cause the guy that build the board I was using was very curious. He's making another one to send and test, might have it by this weekend. Anyone that is interested should come out so you can test it out. You can delete these pictures if you need to.
Ice Sailing Rocks!!!
Oh yeah, did I say how clear the ice was and how shallow North Long Lake bay is? when the sun popped out for a brief, shining hour it was like you could imagine yourself in Maui as you powered over the sand, weeds and fish. The only thing that broke the spell was looking at your reflection in the ice and seeing you had gloves, jacket, helment and snowpanties on. And you had to look out for duck holes that might cool you donwn.
Other than that it was JUST like you in MAUI
Did I say ICE Sailing ROCS~
EDIT: after re-reading this I think they should rename "duck holes" I think if I was heading at one and it was open water, I'd probably JUMP, not duck.

well ? how did the loaded iceboard do ???
Great pics, very curious how you fealt the loaded did on jibes ? easy to turn ? Looks great but Im still not convinced of the ice thing - okay I should come up and join you before I make up my mind - will the warm temps put a damper on things ?
Re: well ? how did the loaded iceboard do ???
Jibes like a champ. I think it jibes as good as a freeskate but gets blown away in the straights. I'm working on the blades, trucks and length to overcome speed problems. 25mph is still perty fast though. You should try it, you'll like it. I think the temps will kill the ice, good thing as it can start all over again and make more glass hopefully we'll see.RobH wrote:Great pics, very curious how you fealt the loaded did on jibes ? easy to turn ? There is not really much of a beach there just a ramp with parking. You could set up there but I don't know how much traffic it gets. Probably lots as it's like the first public access on big water you would see as an out of towner comming up from the south. Another downside is the launch is on the NW corner of the bay. I suppose straight south would work OK for kiters but bring you out away from shore. Looks like there is lots of millfoil once you get out over a few feet over water. Lastly, if the winds are from the SE or East and you get in trouble out there, your drag back to shore will be stopped short by the road if you can't touch bottom. I mean the road runs right along the shore almost on the east half of the bay. It's probably shallow enough to touch 100 ft from shore though to stop your kite from becoming a traffic hazzard.Tom L wrote:If North Long Lake is so shallow wouldn't it make a good lake for beginning kite boarding? Is it shallow enough to stand in (like 2.5 to 3 feet)? Obviously not the whole thing but portions of it.
I'd stop up there some weekend day to check it out. There are probably other spots that are better see as there is so much water up there. Personally, I think Reddy Creek or Malmo is much more beginer friendly as the weedless sand bottom streches hundereds of yards from shore, well at LEAST 100 yds. Plus it's closer to the Twin Cities by 15 miles but hell what's an extra 30 since you are already up there. Check it out.
Locals, where do you kite?
