Cannon Monday?

Post by Mike W »

Anyone care to join me for a session at Cannon tomorrow. The small launch in the NW corner of the lake should work fine for tomorrow's E/SE winds. I am thinking 1:30-2pm arrival.

Kind of looking forward to Pepin cranking up later in the afternoon. The water is high now, there is no beach currently at "The Point." iWIndsurf is showing ESE in the steady 20's.

Cannon delivered a really nice opener for Kurt and me. Tom L. was rigging up when we left. The wind was really cranking when we arrived, but backed off a notch during the session. Still it was a nicely powered time on smaller kites with some decent terrain. Kurt was floating some nice ones as usual.

What other wind sport can you do 11 months out of the year. In the fall I had 3 weeks beween my last water ride and the first snow kite. Now in the spring I will have no gap. Sunday on the water on clear lake. Monday on the water on Canon lake. Wednesday back on the snow at Milacs. Very cool. One hour south to water kite. 2 hours north to snow kite. The fun never ends. Be careful at Canon. It drops off to fast for my taste. Where I went out I drift lauched just fine. On the way back in I missed the shallows and almost put my kite in a tree before I could touch bottom. A frantic panic attempting to get traction in my floaty dry suit and life vest. The state park beach on south side of Clear lake had great shallows for drift launch and self landing with the nne wind I had Sunday.

After getting skunked with a week in south florida, this was just what the doctor ordered. Thanks for the suggestion and sharing the session Mike! Good to ride liquid again. We were contemplating rigging 7 meters when first arrived but ended up riding 10 (Mike) and 11 yarga (me-more like a 9m). It was pretty gusty but I was supprised how big the ramps got on not that much of a fetch.

Tom. We can ride all 12 months! I need to start keeping track of sessions, Mike didn't you say you had 120+ last year?

Ice Breaker award: I thought Mike and I had this year but I guess Tom L (the other Tom L) scored on Normandale lake. We should have a plaque/trophy to pass around each year. I think Stroh had it in 2007, I believe I got it last year http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YsmUOHvZDc0 , and this year Tom L. Way to go!

Unfortunetly Kurt I will have to sheepishly decline the 2009 Ice Breaker award. This ruse has gone on long enough. Normandale Lake is so small it makes Calhoun look like Mille Lacs. My misspelled reference to Katabatic winds coming off the North slope of Hyland was supposed to be the dead give away. Nailing tricks in front of the jogging path on Normandale conjures up images of me having a friendly conversation with the ever present park police. Although some people will even resort to kiting in a swimming pool to get in a session, Normandale Lake is a little too small for my taste. The glory was fun while it lasted but I think I wll have to give the award to you & Mike.

I was surprised, but taken in by your ruse, Tom. Since I hit the water about 20 minutes before Kurt, I get the award for MN. John Z. gets the kiting award overall, but honorable mention goes to those brave souls who enviously watched John as they skimmed atop the frigid water on their sailboards. :)

Tom Latcham gets the hardcore award though. He drove to Iowa on Sunday for a sub-40 degree 15m session before the wind died off, and then joined us at Cannon on Monday for a double header.

Thanks for clarifying, Tom. I thought you had to be kidding when you said you rode little Normy, it’s a small yucky pond with all sorts of hazards so I didn’t think you would actually do it. Even if there were Katabatic winds!

I learned this week the Saturday before while we were in Padre a young window washer fell to his death working on the 8500 Tower, so there was kind of a bad vibe around the joint anyways.

I have seen a few kiters ride the lake in the winter when it’s frozen over, but the office towers, surrounding landscape and small size have kept me off it even in winter. That and my co-workers would probably think I should be working instead of goofing off outside!
