Pics of snow on Pepin 2/10/08

Post by Pete »

The snow cover on Pepin is varied. Ranging from bare ice to foot deep pillows of creamy powder. The powder can be had where the wind was raging yesterday, basically out aways from shore. The pic of the ice boat is from Saturday. I just wanted to give everyone a visual of what lies 1.5 hours away if the lakes are bare up in Mpls. I'm heading out of town Tuesday for a week and a half so Nora can keep the current conditions posted.

I was mistaken when I said "foot deep pillows of creamy powder." What I should have said was...The snow cover on Pepin is varied. Ranging from bare ice to foot deep "waves" of overcooked french bread. Yea, those drifts are very firm. Still decent coverage though.

I took a couple of photos. The snow by Lake City is drifts like Pete said. The snow at the wayside north of Lake City looks smoother and more coverage. I rode out of the boat launch and the wind was very minimal for my kite and the snow was firm. Here's a shot of Lake City by the Point and one from the wayside today.

So far the weekend is looking good for wind on Pepin. If the direction forecast doesn't change then it looks like the town of Pepin would be the best spot. Maybe Maiden Rock. Still days off and the wind is the last thing that's predictable. Post if you come down...I don't work this weekend so I'll be out both days.

I'm thinking about making the trek down to my mom's and swinging by on Saturday. Hows the snow? Still crusty?

Hi Wings,
We got a couple inches of fresh on top of the drifts that are in the photos. With the temps around 32 it should soften up. I've been working 12 hour shifts this week and haven't had the time to get to the lake at all. I should be out around 11am tomorrow. Feel free to call for an update. 651-208-4523.

Nora,
I might try and come up this afternoon from Rochester. How well does Pepin work on a south wind? Seems like that's the forecast for today...

Hi Mark,
A south wind at the wayside is good...a south east is great! It's blowing SE right now. Should be a great day!

Thanks Nora...I'll head up...is the wayside on the Wisconsin side, or just north of Lake City?

It's the one just north of Lake City. Veteran's memorial wayside. It's 9:50 right now...I'm headed out the door...see you there!

Mark, Dave and I went to Lake Shady yesterday and played with our 6M. It is a tiny "lake" so anywhere we end up we can walk back. We are newbies, so it's good for us. I don't know if you want such a small lake, but if you only have a short time to fly today, please come and join us. We will be there around noon or so. If you can join us, please call my cell at 993-5316. (there is a park entrance on 12 in east oronoco.)
