Ottertail Lake Fall Surfari

Post by Tighe »

Ottertail Lake, located just 3 hours NW of the Twin Cities offers some of Minnesota's finest riding conditions. Large shallow sandy bottoms, big open waters, and lots of non-wind opportunities make it an ideal spot for a weekend getaway. There's a small community of riders developing up there and they've invited us up for a weekend of riding, socializing, hanging out, and whatever else we make happen.

We will offer lessons on both days for those looking for a little assistance. Most likely a wetsuit will be required.

Significant others and family are welcome. There is a waterpark at a great new hotel, as well as great golfing.

Lots of lodging options. Camping, hotels, some personal residences.

Evening activities may include a BBQ, bar hopping, bonfire, whatever the group feels up to.

Date: Sept. 22nd & 23rd

Location: Ottertail Lake. (County park on the NE side)

There is no fee for this. Just a fun gathering of riders.

Standard fees for Instruction apply (see School section of this site)

Let us know if you're interested. We'll keep you posted as the weekend develops.

Tighe fly@lakawa.com
Mark mjoh069@aol.com

Please email both of us with your questions. Mark has a cabin on the lake.

Friday could be good.

I'm heading up Saturday am.

Mark Johnson has opened up his house for up to 10 people. First come first serve. Shoot him a line if interested: mjoh069@aol.com

He also said he's got some room in his yard for a few tents.

He's hosting a BBQ on Saturday night (BYoM-Bring Your own Meat.)

Should be a fun weekend.

An approaching Low is forecast to bring in some great warm South winds on Saturday and Sunday.

Ed Janssen has also opened up his cabin for a few additional riders on Saturday night. Also has some room in his yard for those looking for a place to set up a tent.

Should be a fun weekend. Hope you can join us.

Here's some final details. It looks like a great weekend. Hope to see you up there.

We're gonna to be at Mark and Ed's cabins. The wind may determine where we locate during the day. We'll head to Marks in the evening for a BBQ and Bon Fire.

Directions:
Directions from the city: 94 west to Hwy 78 north. This is the Ashby/Battle Lake exit. (This is the easiest route to take. There are numerous back roads for the more adventurous.) Take Hwy 78 north through Battle Lake to Otter Tail Lake. Hwy 78 runs on the east side of Otter Tail, with the lake on the left (west) side as you head north. Mark’s cabin is towards the north end of the lake on the left hand side, identified by the crossed hockey sticks, and is #30605. If you come to a boat launch, you have gone too far.

To get to the Latham family cabin (Ed's), continue north on Hwy 78 from Mark’s place. You will come to a retail/commercial area which includes a bank, the entrance to Thumper Pond golf course and Comfort Suites hotel, Otter Tail Bakery, The Otter Super Club and a BP gas station/convenience store. Take a left (west) on Cnty Rd #1 just past the BP gas station. (You will get a great view of the lake on the left hand side.) The cabin is approximately 4 miles west of Hwy 78, or ½ mile west of the bridge over the Otter Tail River. The address is #42152, and has a Latham sign. Come on down the driveway.

Wow what a great lake!

We had two great days of riding, great hospitality by Mark Johnson and Ed Janssen and Family, and some interesting nighttime activities.

Ottertail is a rare find. It's huge, clean and has shallows that extend out even farther than Malmo. The winds were 15-25 on Saturday and 20-30+ on Sunday. Never gusty, just some 10-15min. fluctuations during the day....usually cranking up another notch.

Because of the wind direction we launched out of Ed's family cabin on the North side of the lake. Nice big grassy lawn behind his cabin for rigging up, great deck for watching the scene, and we were refueled on Sunday by some great pulled pork BBQ sandwiches his wife made for lunch. Mark put most of us up on Saturday night at his cabin on the NE side. Another beautiful place overlooking the water. Incredible views. We hit the Otter, a local bar, at about 12:30 on Saturday night. Let's just say it was an intersting cultural experience. Adam almost scored a late night skinny dip...but just couldn't close the deal.

Ed's nephew Joe and his son Steve, were looking great on the water. Joe was pulling big kite loops and going huge. He's got a Chris B. style and no fear attitude. Ed was looking dialed and ripping it up. Nick was floating some big ones. We had a lot of guys getting up the first time and looking good. Martin was the rock star of the weekend, grabbing his first rides upwind and then on Sunday going out in 30mph winds on his 9m and looking dialed.

All in all a fun weekend. Good to hang with everyone. Thanks again to Mark and Ed for hosting the weekend. Might have to make it an annual thang.

Grab the bar.... ; )

Where are the good launches on Ottertail? Can someone make one of those fancy Google map things with the launches marked? Or maybe just a verbal description? Thanks!
