cheap waroo's

Post by Tim S. »

Check out the best website, under pre-owned gear. They are starting to post lots of 06 waroo's. All different colors and sizes. From $300-500. The kites don't come with bars, but that still seems like a pretty good deal for a cheap flat kite.

I picked up a 12, can't wait for the water to freeze!

I recently bought a full complement of waroos and missed out on these good prices

Darlene, I see your looking for a 14 TD and may be set on it. But, you might want to consider a 14 waroo especially with the deep discounts these days-particularly in the pink colored kites that none of the dudes want to fly. Myself and a handful of others had TDs but switched to the waroo. Just a thought

Anyone looking for TDs might check with Midewest Mountaineering (Peter Noren). Don't know if they still have some left, but he's been willing to make some pretty good deals on kites for me.

In general seems like Best's pricing is more comparable to other kite mfrs these days... the kite only prices seem low but the bar & lines are priced around $300 which puts them in the zone with other mfrs pricing?

The waroo is a good cheep water kite but if you want something for year-round get something with a one pump inflation. Caby, Slingy, and the Nash boys all have something. You will not regret it after you try and pinch your nipples (lol) in subzero temps. It becomes very difficult to keep air in the struts when the nipples are cold and hard. (lol)

A one pump system or a foil is the only way to go for winter riding.

Agree working with cold nipples is definitely a drag (lol), but I can pump my waroo up in about the 1/3 of the time it takes me to inflate my TD. Don't know why but it had to push air into the TD.

i don't have stopper balls (or any kind of fancy one-pump thingy) on any of my kites, but since i've learned how to do the swap-without-holding maneuver to plug them i actually like not having the stopper because it makes inflating go noticeably faster

if it's cold enough you can always plug them with your nipples. ( lol but not funny)

anyone that is thinking about it. I just got my kite this afternoon, it was delivered in great shape! clean! new pump! bag! and from what it looks like in perfect condition. It's basically brand new! For $625 I got a new 07 bar, and basically a new 06 kite. Thats cheaper than I got my last kite 2nd hand kite for. :D

Steve, you'd still be dragging your knuckles if it wasn't for Nan.

I consider being a knuckle dragger a compliment, it's farther up the evolutionary tree than any of my ancesters achieved. :?

On the question of cold, hard nipples in the winter, couldn't one apply a smooth coat of hot oil, massaging the hot oil onto the cold nipples, until they warmed up enough to then easily pump up the kite with?

Dave, take my word for it, the oil gets too cold to put on your nipples.

You guys are too much.

I don't know what kite to get. What are the pros & cons of the Waroo vs. the Turbo Diesel? I think I need 1-pump.

Darlene
I think others will agree that the TD is more of a performance kite in that it is faster and more grunty feeling (as I think tighe put it once). I personal didn't like this feel and preferred the smoother and slower moving waroo. I felt more stable on it and had problems with over sending and correcting on the TD. I thought that my waroo handled gusts and more wind but other may disagree. Just my preference and maybe this will change as I progress in abilities-but for now I like the feel of the waroos. I personally don't like the one pump system as it is harder to pump up (mine is anyways) and if you have to replace a bladder it is definitely more work than the waroo. I often travel with the struts still inflatted that minimizes set up time. I think the TD launches easier and is probably better constructed than the waroo. You have a 10 TD so you are familiar with the feel of the TDs. If you like it then you might want to stick with it. Plus you could probably get by with your current bar. The best thing is to fly them next to one another. Of course there is always better kites on the horizon but you'll have to pay a premium. I'll have to be convinced of considerable improvements before I'm ready to give up my 2006 waroos and shell out cash for any new 2007 kite. I'm sure others have some insight.

The Waroo has 5 struts and the pulleys are on the bridle. The TD has 7 struts and the pulleys are on the bridle and the bar.The Waroo has more curve to it's profile than the TD, so size for size the TD has more effective working area.
The waroo has a deeper profile from the leading edge of the kite, this is also helped by less struts and more unsupported cloth. So the Waroo flies a little slower, a little bit further back in the window. It turns Ok but not super fast.
The TD has a more supported canopy with a cleaner leading edge, this makes it faster flying, further forward in the wind window, a little faster turning.
So the waroo is more stable and a little slower turning, less susceptable to surging in gusts. The TD turns faster, flies faster with a little more top end.
An important consideration for you is the depower on the waroo is the length you can physically push the bar away, the td bar pulley blocks allow twice the distance of travel when you push the bar away, so more physical depower. Some people say a kite without pulley blocks has a better feel with no delay in it's resonse caused by the pulley blocks, personally I think this is marketing hype as I've ridden both and notice no difference, but it's what the users say.
Both kites have good reputations, both kites have their fans, Kurt made a good point about your bar but I doubt the 10m and the 14m use the same bar size, but I don't know for sure.
So if you think you're more performance orientated probably the TD, if you want something with a little less performance the waroo.
Other companies to consider are Ocean Rodeo, Airush, Naish and of course my favourite Cabrinha.
Now is a good time to shop for kites as quite a few companies are bringing out 07 bows and there are great deals to be had on the 06's.
Judd and Dianne have got our kites down in SPI , if you want to try a Contra 14m or Crossbow 12m(2)for another comparison tell them I said you could try one of ours, Darlene
