The Gathering.....Thanks!!
A heartfelt thanks goes out to Steve & Tighe, & anyone else who helped promote this get together. What a fabulous time. I missed Sunday, I'm sure that was great too. Thanks everyone for all the launches and great conversation. An all around perfect weekend. I don't get to sail with the gang too much, so it was a real plus for me to ride with so many great friends. Can't wait till the next one!!!

Yes, nice idea you guys! Thanks for putting the plan together. I brought my daughter and her friend up on Friday. They had a blast playing in the shallows while I enjoyed the excellent wind. In the early part of the day the waves were coming at a sharper angle toward shore than the wind was. This made for excellent ramps on the way out, and clean breaking rideable waves on the way in. Very sweet!
Tom, you were throwing some very smooth moves out there. Jim N. and Kurt W. were having no trouble at all staying upwind on their bows. (Is it ok to mention bow kites in this thread?) It looked like a lot of the Mille Lacs regulars were down at Reddy on Friday. Sorry we missed you guys.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, we wanted this to be a weekend created by all those who attended. All we (Steve, Stroh, Eric and myself) did is choose a date and throw the idea out there. The experience which we all shared is the result of the great attitude of everyone, the smiles, the grace of great weather, and an ideal spot to play. Thank you all for making it a wonderful weekend for Julie and I.
Yes everyone was so dialed. When I was teaching I was concerned the students would get freaked by all the rider around them, but they said it just jazzed them up. What a beatiful scene all those kites in the air. Saturday afternoon there must have been 30-40 kites in the air.
Carlsona Resort did a great job welcoming us and feeding our hunger. Kudos go to Ryan and Denis for their sweet, albiet short, moonlight session. As soon as they hit the water a huge cloud rolled in...bummer.
I was a bit disappointed we weren't able to share the wind with more of our boom clinging friends. It was great to see Woody and Woodette, chasing each other about this morning on the water. So glad you guys could make it down. Love that camper!
Pete's did a great job welcoming us by reserving a whole section of the campground for us. Unfortunately we really were a challenging group for them. There just isn't enough room in the campground to have social gatherings (ie. loud partying) right next to family camping. They have a quite time of 10:00pm and from what I heard Tyson pissed on the fire at 3:30 to close things down (that was a joke) Next year we will need to have the socializing in another spot and return to Pete's to retire for the evening. They know the farmer across the road and we might be able to explore having a bonfire way out in his field next year.
I think this is a successful model for future get togethers. We don't need to make these formal "events" in order to have a great time. It is just all of us gathering together, in spirit, in the wind, that makes the day.
If anyone has some pics please post them, or send them to me and I will put them up.

Who ever it was that lined up the wind for " the gathering" I want to thank them...3 days in a row when we could put kites in the air...how often does that happen?.
Friday ( though I missed it due to work) was apparently a great day, Saturday that wind was so steady I had a great time trying to scare myself. Nancy got her best jumps ever.Sunday sure it was light but people rode so 3 days in a row.
I think 5 or 6 people learned to kite( Thanks Tighe , Nathan,Scott for teaching), Jeff Adamski took it to the water for the first time and did really well.
Newbies, I saw Randy and Jenny Johnson riding totally in control ,easily staying upwind and looking very relaxed , they started water kiting in April. Kate Svengaard was working the kite , with her Dad giving instruction, Kate got some of her longest rides to date. Kate's 17 so thats a great foundation for our sport.
Something I thought was cool was the number of women out there, I want to say a "welcome to the Darkside" to Darlene from St Cloud, a new learning kiter came to the event on her own and seemed to slot right in.I hope you had a good time Darlene.
It was cool to see old friends, see old friends I havent seen for a long time
and to meet the new people for the first time. Every one just seemed stoked and ready for a great weekend.
Special thanks to Mike Fox for coming with a plan to put out bouys for kiter cross, everyone was having so much fun we never got it done, but Mike was there and ready if we needed him....cheers Mike.
There was a windsurfing presence, I think it would be great if more came if we decide to have another gathering, the boardheads that came flew the windsurfing flag well and didn't let the poleboarders down as far as socialising and "great to be here" attitude.
For myself I had a gas, thanks everyone who came, shared their passion, smiles, beers, conversation, Heather for singing so beautifully,Katherine and Julie for feeding me again and everyone who made it a memorable weekend....cheers!.

Enjoying life and Windancing.
GOOD TIMES
Still sore , but grinning ear to ear. Hope I can wipe this smile off my face by Monday! Not just a great couple of days riding, but even better were all the wind-chasers who showed-up and made it a great time. Remember the Bud commercial? "I LUV U GUYS." Or, is that the residual beer talking? Anyway it was great to see all the familiar faces, meet new ones and finally conquer the "UPWIND BEAST." Thanks for taking it from a concept, an idea in Blaines' head, to a full blown BLAST of hot ridin' chop hoppin'air!!
JIM N P.S: Thanks for not making it into another race.

It was just great to see you all again!
Woodette and I had a real fun drive down in our big blue 'surf mobile', and a fun ride back too. The 6+ hr drive for us is worth every minute, wind or not. And, we have both agreed that our three children will accompany us in all of our future trips. Just too much fun to miss, and too many really wonderful people to meet.
Although the windsurfing presence was small at this Gathering, we still had an awesome time on the water with you all....sharing the wind...
Tighe: I'll email you some pics from our camera tomorrow.
Thanks

Woohoo! Great time. Thanks to all the kiters who stayed bunched up together on Saturday....I had the whole northern side of the beach practically to myself! Nice clean waves to hop and surf, room to try new stuff: toeside...check, heel to toe jibe...check, toe to heel jibe...check, nice downwind S runs...check. Best jumps since Padre. Best day ever on a kite!! Stroh, I have to one-up you on the smiley faces!!!!!

Hey everybody!
I had a really great time at the gathering. Thank you Alfie for letting me borrow your kite and board on Friday and your kite on sat, and sun. Thanks scott for the use of your board on sat. Thank you everyone for the food and beer and great time.
I was up and riding for my second and third time this weekend! I learned a lot, got a couple great ideas, and had lots of fun.

What a great couple of days!!! Friday everyone was rockin' on a bout 12's at Malmo. I took a downwinder that day and ran into Larry and Matt K half way down. They said the wind was better between Carlsona and Malmo. so I went back up and rode with the Malmo crew. It was pretty nuts at Malmo on Saturday. The wind came up at 3 and all the wind junkies hit the water in minutes...It was quite interesting jumping near shore with a few kites around. Everyone did great staying a safe distance from each other I thought. The eating on the screened patio at Carlsona was great.
Yum yum food and drink! I think ?Denis got off the water pretty quickly after the first lightening bolt
The bonfire was quite humorous with the girly girls flocking around Tyson...One of them talking to the smoke and running around. So that is why Tyson peed on the fire...

thanks all -- it was a turning point
To all who have put up with my bad clothes, obsession with snap shackles, insistence on launching my beat up demo model Peter Lynn, and driven me back to the launch, I want to extend a heartfelt thanks. Besides great wind, hot women, tons of new people to meet, sun, beer and all the rest, I was given the gift of getting up on my board for some extended runs this weekend. It was an epiphany, a joy, one of the best experiences of my life, and one I hope to (safely) continue doing well into the future. There is nothing like kiting, what did we do before it? Missed sunday because my legs were totally thrashed, and I have limped for two days now. So they better be good and broken in for the next time out. See ya'll at the beach.
"They call me Doctor Love.. Doctor love!!" - an obscure rock band.
A Blessed Event
Just as everyone breathed energy to this event, Mother Mille Lacs brought perfect conditions in gift to us. I'm not sure the source of "The Gathering" name, but it was certainly appropriate.
They say "healing" means "the process of becoming whole". The weekend had that felt sense of peace and happiness. I guess that's what's so magical about these first time events...there's simply no expectation. I recall the pioneering hang gliding events, windsurfing, rollerblading, snowboarding and now this emerging party for kiteboarding. Very beautiful. Thanks for all the positive energy, intolerance for complaint, and opportunity to just be.
Woody and Woodette...you epitimize the power of the positive vibe...so good to see you again and certainly hoping to make your event next year. Love the Blue Moose!!

I am so thrilled to have FINALLY got up on my board for the first time! (It's been a LONG process). Got to Malmo at 9am Friday & nobody there, then I see Jerry's car (can't miss it), thanks for showing me to Reddy. Thanks Jon Stroh for helping me get up for the first time! What a feeling! Caution---calf cramps occur when you get up & suddendly do a forward face plant. My muscles are finally feeling better, but still have cuts & bruises (when did I get THAT one?) I know the one on my back happened when one of the times when I accidently sent the kite & got lifted/dragged downwind, then my board hit me in the back & I thought I broke a rib for a minute. What a great bunch of people! Thank you Caroline & Scott Ridout & Aaron & Emily for letting me camp with you. Thanks Caroline & Cassandra for bringing me upwind on the jet ski! Caroline has got to be the nicest woman I have ever met. And Emily the most adventurous--can't wait to ride with you in the future! Thanks Tighe, Nathan, & Todd for past lessons & tips. I wish more people would use their full real names on this site so I knew who you were when you post.......

Great event - Thanks to all - special thanks to the locals!
Great event, excellent group of people and couldnt ask for much better wind. It was great fun riding with everyone, Im slowly getting use to the traffic out there - its a bit scary at first and still is the reason for the majority of my falls. Just when I think I have things dialed in for a newbe, I quickly change course to stay far away from the traffic, I ended up loosing my board on one occasion, no problem I can body drag back to it - well if I could see it I could. This is where I owe 2 locals from the area big time, they found my board still drifting about an hour after I lost it, they knew the kiters would be launching from memorial park so they were super nice and brought it back, looking for its owner. That says allot about those locals and to the rest of you who ride up at Malmo who ensure the kiting group stays on the good side of those who live in the area.
Thanks to everyone who made this event possible and showing
Till next time we ride

All the events I attended so far have been "Gatherings" for me in the first place. The windsurfing is just the bonus. I have met so many wonderful people over the last couple of years, which I share this incredible passion with now. (Except the rigging part
...thankfully it has been looked after very well in the past). I was fascinated watching all you kiters, you seem like puppets in the wind and I look forward to try it myself. Woody and me always head home from those events full-filled, grateful and charged to try something new.
Randy, I truly hope we can welcome you at our Regatta. Windsurfing together would be just a bonus, but listening to you play the trumpet would be the highlight.
