Hey coach I just picked up a 5'2 2001 mutant, board is in really good condiition, 1 fin on the front 4 in the back. Should work nice for light winds.
Could you give me some tips on riding mutant style, I am thinking of getting the koch straps, did you find to have better control with or without booties.
thanks can't wait to ride it matt

Matt:
It's a bit different from what you are used to - you seem to be going for the wake-style riding. But, it's an extremely solid board with a great overall range.
The cool thing with the Mutants was the "semi" twin-tip design. You can ride them either way, but it is best to jibe them in a turn unless you plan to ride toe-side or backwards for a long ways. Backwards for a long way yields a slightly awkward feel and sub-normal performance.
Without digressing too far - it's probably a LOT faster ride than you are used to. You might find it harder to dig the tail in and grind upwind. But, the overall speed and planing of that board makes up for any faux ability to "dig in." It can totally grind upwind once you get used to it - and the speed and planing of it make the board a premuim midwest ride. It will coast you through wind holes you never dreamed of cruising through before.
Strangely, I was talking to Naish just yesterday trying to decide on a board. The 4'11" was my board last year. I was thinking that the old/new 5'2" would be an even better choice for the 2003 season.
Even though I outweigh you quite a bit (30lbs.?), the 5'2" would at least be a fantastic ride for you in light, 10-20mph, conditions.

Thanks coach, Right now I am at the point were I want to try as many different setups and styles with kiteboarding, this winter I have been riding the pully only but find that I like to stay hooked in for most manuevers, plus minnesota doesn't boast prime wakestyle conditions as far as down kites drifting to shore and stuff.
Also the wakestyle stuff were you do tricks no whip is all possible with twin tips and mutants.
