Rochester Windsurfing...Anywhere super close?

Post by Bryce »

Anyone know if Foster-Arends Park, Silver Lake, Cascade, Bamber, or Mayowood have any restrictions against winsurfing on the lakes. Or if any of them would work for today's south wind??

I know they might suck.. but it would be nice to get out even I can't get out to cannon or pepin.
If anyone else has some suggestions...

I'm still looking into a few of those myself and i'll letcha know what i find out. I know that the boyscout camp resevoir and the willow creek resevoir are open to wind sports (i've talked to the county fellow who manages them a couple of times getting info.) and with the right wind i plan on using willow creek for kiting eventually here. We need to keep our fingers crossed that they open up silver creek soon but i'm sure you've heard about the soap opera going on about that one. Nice thing about the county resevoirs is that they don't allow anything using a gas motor on them so that helps make up for the smaller size hehe. If you wanna touch base definately give me a call 507-251-1314....ask for Amos if a lady picks up :D

I ended up going to cascade lake... I drove around a little bit to check out some potinional spots. Cascade is on the west side of rochester. I got there at like 7:30, rigged up a 7.4, my ladyfriend got some practice, and I cruised around lake until an hour after sunset. Pretty great day to get out on the water and cool off.

I think I'll have to check out that willow creek next week sometime... Give me a call when you are going try it out and I'll try to come along.

I talked to Denny from the park and rec this morning and he said that both Silver Lake and Foster Arends are open to wind sports. Keep in mind to avoid the paddle boat rental area on Silver Lake (it's normally marked with buoys) and keep an eye out for the area rowing team because they cruise that lake from time to time and they can move hehe. Oh and beware the geese, some of those buggers are mean :D . I'm recovering from laser eye surgery right now and the doc says no water sports until next tuesday so we'll see if i can hold out the weekend but i'll give you a call when i'm ready for water again.

Silver Lake ~ basically waist deep including about 12-18 inches of Goose crap adorning the bottom. That lake is nasty! It also seems to be in a wind shadow all the way around. I'm such a positive person :(

 Positive or not the truth is the truth Pete and unfortunately i think you have Silver Lake pegged. Check out the Willow Creek resevoir if you get a chance Bryce...like i said it's not very big but it's right on the edge of town and the days that i've stopped by there to see what the wind was doing have all had decent wind. Is Cascade one of the man-mades in one of the new developments?

Is Cascade fully developed yet Bryce? I know they were going to join all the little quarry lakes in the southwest corner of 14 and 52 into one bigger lake, have they done that? I found this:

http://www.ci.rochester.mn.us/park/Casc ... erPlan.pdf

Looks like it could be sailable but hard to tell how big it is or will be, no mention of acreage.

On second thought after looking at that map I relize that I was on manor woods. I first saw interlochen lake and that lake looked pretty steep all the way around and it didn't look like there was any sort of public access there. So I follow that around and got to Manor Woods.
Manor woods was ok... I wouldn't make it a regular sailing spot.. It is pretty gusty a lot of wind blocks.. but it was neat just to be able to get out on a day I probably wouldn't of had time to go to cannon or pepin.

I think I'll have to try and swing by the real cascade just to see how far off i was. I was on the northeastern side.. probably just a walk through some trees to the other lake.
