Warm clothes are probably a waste of space... it was never below 75 last week.
Be sure to stop in and say hello to Jeff at Air Padre... all the kite shops are pretty close together. You can't miss Jeff, he's on Padre Blvd next to Ted's restaurant (awesome and cheap breakfast) and it's right on the way to the North Flats where you will most likely be riding unless you're hiittin' the waves.
Jeff deals in Flexifoil kites (which I found to be very user friendly) among several others.
Jay with SPI Kiteboarding is another pretty cool guy I ran into and helped me fix some newbie bad habits... in fact everyone down there was pretty cool except for Teran who was pissed off about some condo project they are proposing behind the flats (but he rides like a madman so the pissed off thing probably suits his image!).
I would just wear a pair o' jeans and sweatshirt for the trip down, the only time you'll use them is when you arrive back in MN.
I would pack an extra long sleeve rash guard to protect your forearms from the sun (I got a nasty farmer tan/burn) and your longest board shorts to protect your knees from the same unless you've been hitting the tanning booth.
Also my calves of all things got burned, I think from the reflection from the water. Ouch!
And actually extra filp flops might not be a bad idea... mine were constantly wet and I wore 'em everywhere and eventually got blisters... a dry back up pair would have been nice!
Hi Chanrider,
Sorry If I seemed hostile. I am really a fun-loving guy that's in fact why I made the comittment to move here from Mn. I love kiteboarding massively! You, as well as many others probably are quite unaware of the imminent changes to one of the planets greatest kiteboarding venues. Notably, unplanned growth and development which shall make quality near-shore wind and access very difficult. For you, this might not seem like much cuz you can always take a trip somewhere else when SPI's conds. gets ruined due to wind-shadows of massive condos and commercial buildings. But for those of us who've made the commitment to make this our home- we take it a bit more personally-can you blame me/us? You obviously came to kite and had a good time. You'd most likely want to return for more of the same and have others enjoy the same fun in the future right? Maybe we can all do some bit of good by writing to the chamber of commerce or get some form of petition going to save some sacred space on both the flats side (laguna) and the gulf side for kiting and windsurfing far up the road. I really am a pretty jolly fellow overall... Hope you're kiting passion and skills continue to grow safely and smoothly. Cheers,
Teran Hughes, aka the uncool yet ironically angry kiteboarder/gym-owner
I'm the one who should apologize, I was sort of kidding around but I understand this is a pretty serious issue especially for the locals.
I was very impressed by your riding abilities and I'm sure you're advocating hard to keep the wind blockages to a minimum. I agree the North Flats is a great area and it would a shame to have the wind interrupted.
If you post an email address I would happy to send a note to the SPI COC, as I'm sure other "tourists" on this board would as well. Maybe they will consider the negative impact on potential wind tourism and consider modifying their plans somewhat (esp. since I understand SPI is a tourist driven economy).
Also I assume the local windsurfing and kite shops (and maybe even some of the existing condo and hotel operators?) could have come pull also... they pay property taxes etc and should have some say!
Anyway no offense intended. BTW, are there other possible spots north of the North Flats that are potentially good for riding? ... it seems like the lagoon gets pretty shallow and mucky the further north you go so maybe the North Flats is a potential "last stand."
Well keep on riding and fighting for the cause, hope to see you again at an unspoiled Flats!
