bridle line issues
HELP! I was kiting on Skyline Drive in UT this past weekend and borrowed my foil kite to a buddy. When the kite collapsed, he dragged it through the snow and now my bridle lines look like cotton candy. I waxed the lines to keep them from sticking, but they frayed and are now all different lengths (i.e. the kite won't take its shape and fly). Does anyone have any suggestions that may get my kite back up in the air?
Thanks!
Thanks!

I believe it. OK, maybe not the buddy part
.
I had the same sort of thing thing happen. My bridles got totally fuzzed last year after I blew down wind waaaay over powered and dropped the kite. It was so overpowered that, with the brakes on, it just slid side to side and pulled me even with my edges dug in. It was sun-baked snow and it really messed up the back lines.
I pulled the lines tight one at a time and rubbed over them with a stick of ski wax. that was enough to get mine back in shape but I had to work at it for a while.

OK why I think it's bogus. 1) name Nochasta, as you know chasta is the ozone team rider, 2) skyline was dicovered by brian the ozone importer,3) just a personal thing the guy doesn't know the definitions of borrowed and loaned. 4) bridle line could be frayed if they were dragged over something extremely abrasive, for example our last snow over ice, but in Utah right now they have deep pow, where did the abrasion come from, 5) Bridle is made from spectra, to be so damaged as to stop the kite from flying is impossible, you just can't stretch spectra that much. It's components don't have the elasticity, it would fail before it stretched that much.6) first time poster.
My guess is the post is one of those people who think foils are not very good, I would also guess that a certain company used ozone ads and photo shopped their kites into the ad for which they have received a little negative press, for some reason some of their people seem to enjoy pissing matches on the various forums and are trying a little slamming on Lakawa.
If the person who made the post will show me their kite and prove me wrong, I'll post I'm an "asshole" and take them out for a 5 course by way of apology.

Got to be Bogus. Add this to Steve's thinking.
1.) You go kiting at one of the premiere snowkiting venues in North America and you don't mention one thing about your experience. Most people would post something about the awsome experience. Huh??
2.) Skyline is relatively remote. 1.5 hrs from SLC. You go there with a your buddy who needs to borrow a kite? People from the Midwest don't just travel 1/2 way across the country to Skyline on a whim, and then once you get there, your such a beginner you destroy your buddies kite??
I could see a beginner at Skyline from SLC, but not from the Midwest.

Ok, whether or not this sounds bogus, the fuzzy, cottoncandy bridles can happen any time the snow has been a bit warm.
The lines don't stretch, they get shorter. The snow crystals pull the fibers out one at a time because the spectra is so slippery. As they get pulled out, they tangle into...cottoncandy.
You can see an example of what happens with a cheap braided nylon rope.
Hold the end and pull on one fiber. It gets bunched up and shorter.

Wow! I had no idea a simple question could elicit so much response. Let me assure you the question is most certainly not bogus. The name no chasta comes from the fact that I indeed bumped into Chasta at Skyline last Friday and came to realize quickly that...I'm nochasta. He absolutely blew our minds. He was running a 14M Ozone foil the same day we were struggling to control our Windwing 660s in 20-25 mph winds. He was gapping the road back and forth as if it was no big deal. He was there with his wife and 5 year-old daughter and we hung out with him over dinner at the diner in Fairview (total coincidence). And yes, it is the most epic place I could ever image kiting. Endless terrain, steady winds and views that will stop you in your tracks. The reason I didn't comment on the kiting is because I spent most of the afternoon trying to remedy my jumbled kite lines. UT has not had a considerable snowfall for a month, so the snow is frozen solid at night and corns up during the day...that is why we were at skyline, the snow at Alta was miserable, so we made a roadtrip. Next time, we just go straight to Skyline.
Dave T, thanks for the advice. Perhaps I haven't pulled on my lines enough. I'll try that tonight.
Steveb...I'll send you pictures of the kite lines tonight, along with shots (and hopefully some video) that we took of Chasta this weekend. Then, you can, as you suggested "post I'm an "asshole" and take them out for a 5 course by way of apology"

thanks for the reply and clarification Nochasta. Sounds like an incredible place.
Sorry you got so little valuable advice from the folks here. Sounds like you encountered a fairly rare situation. I hope you can remedy it and get back out again soon.
Do send pics if you can. Always good to learn from others 'challenges" before they become your own.

This thread has been hilarious. Had me fooled.
Sorry Nochasta.
How long was the drive from Alta? My Dad has a place there and I've never made it to Skyline. Looks like 2hrs. The drive up and down the Canyon can be such I pain, that once I get up there I try to avoid it. I have driven down to SLC for dinner and had the Canyon close due to avalanche danger and had to stay at a Hotel till the next morning, before I could get back up the Canyon.
Sorry Nochasta.

Tom...It was about 1.5 hrs from Fairview to the University District in SLC. It's 14 miles up Hwy 31 from Fairview, so I'm guessing you could make it from Alta in about the same amount of time. It's hard to pull yourself away from Alta when the snow is good (which is most of the time!) but Skyline is easily worth the drive. There is only one hotel in Fairview and one more in Mt. Pleasant (15 miles down the road) so book ahead of time if you plan on staying down there. One word of advice...we were there on Friday and it was epic. On Saturday the snowmobiles moved in and it was chaos. Apparently they are only a problem on Saturdays.

Sorry for the delay confessing to my "asshole' status, I haven't been able to get to the site for a couple of days. This is the first post I can make when I know no one will disagree with me.
Nochasta I hope you will accept my apology, the kiting world is small so if we do bump into each other I owe you dinner.
I'll be in SPI the first two weeks of April just in case by some sick coincidence you will be there too.
Though I have to say it blows my mind you had trouble getting your kite to fly. I've trimmed 1/8 of an inch out of a bridle ,due to line damage and it didn't effect the flying qualities of the kite.
As to what the problem is with the kite, sorry I don't have a clue.

Now that I think about it, I had a Windwing 330 trainer for my daughter and the bridle lines on the safety/relaunch line were really inferior and they totally frayed after not much contact with the snow. I suspect that is what happened to yours. Windwing gave me a replacement set. Were they white? They sent me a replacement that was black that was of higher quality. Send some pics to Windwing and complain, they'll probably replace them.
Steve - NO WORRIES...It's just good to know that this forum works...I can't believe the number of responses I received! I hope to see you out on the lakes.
Tom - Yes, they're the white lines and they did seem to fray pretty easily. I'll take your advice and send some pictures to windwing.
It sounds like my problem was somewhat of an anomoly. The good news is that with a steady diet of stretching and waxing (with a soft ski wax) the lines are repaired and the kite is back in service. Thanks everyone for your input.
