Re: New Calhoun photos, exciting capsize rescue!

FYI I rescued a capsized canoe once on Calhoun. The technique I used was: I pulled the upside down canoe across my windsurfer so the canoe was at right angles and balanced. I rolled the canoe down the windsurfer until it was upright. I stood on the windsurfer and got in the canoe. I pulled the peopl...

Re: Lakawa on groupon

All I know about Groupon is that a friend did a similar coupon for his bootcamp style training business and he was swamped. Apparently, Groupon is very popular, out here at least. I am clueless about the MN scene these days. The "bad Karma" post was sarcasm, right?

Re: Gorge in spring?

It can be good, but the wind is more iffy in spring. Also, the current is strong and cold from snow melt.

Re: Booties, Beanies and gloves?

If I still lived in a Minnesota, I would be tempted to try those sticky palm/finger wide receiver gloves. The problem I had with windsurfer gloves was they slipped and you had to grip really hard.

Re: Help - can't pull the mast apart!

Another way to do the bending technique is have two people hold the mast at each end and shake up and down. Some people pulverize the sand with a rubber hammer. The rubber hammer is useful for stuck fins, too.

Re: Gorge Windsurfer accident

I was following Tighe's link to the SPI trek and spotted a Jeff Young sticky. http://www.nwkite.com/forums/t-17502.html There was video of the launch site at Three Mile Canyon. I remember one day I was at that very spot and didn't go out because it was too windy for me and it was much less wind than...

You could try the Turnagain Arm of Cook Inlet near Anchorage. It is famous for having a high tide differential.

I didn't know Jeffery and that he was from Minnesota. I thought I knew all the Minnesota transplants out here. It is a sad family story. An article today in the Hood River News says the river was very very intense out east on the day it happened. http://www.hoodrivernews.com/News%20stories/2010/MAY_...

Why not just call it a "warning" instead of a "ban". From a distance it seems kind of weird to ban something so it won't be banned. To me, a ban sounds too confrontational for you laid back kiters.

Gorge Windsurfer accident

I saw this on the news while at the gym: Hood River windsurfer Jeffrey Young found dead next to Columbia River Three Mile Canyon is a very wide spot in the river way east of Hood River that has amazing rolling swells when it is on, but you often sail far from shore and far from other surfers because...
