Speed Skates

Solomon makes a skate blade on which you mount a standard cross-country ski binding. These make skate ski boots into speedskates. Gear West is out of them right now due to the high demand. According to the folks at Gear West, they are better than speedskates for lake skiing because they smooth out t...

Call from Antarctica via Iridium phone On 1 January 2003, Jamie Young and Brian Cunningham had to abort...

ET, I'd say use whatever you feel to most comfortable moving on and allows you maintain the best edge against the pull of the kite. For bare ice, skates would be good if the ice is smooth enough... but I've been finding that I can actually do pretty well on sharp skies (and I'm crappy on skates). I ...

Just got back from Mahtomedi. The snow cover was actually pretty good. Still large ice patches, but the snow islands were pretty good size and close together. Mike W. was going vertical out on his 7.5 Mossy. I forgot my control bars at home and Mike was gracious to let me use his 4.9 Blade & rig...

It looks like he's climbed up there to untangle lines after a kite crash. That'd be me.

I like how the video captures the excitement, peace, freedom and solitute of winter kiting simultaniously. Best video yet.

Me to!

Hey Mike, I just bought a Flysurfer 9M Warrior from the same guy you got your 16M from. I am so charged!! This is almost double the size of the one and only kite I used last year on the snow. I'm not only psyched about the range and power possibilities, but also Flysurfer's emphasis on control and s...

Lake Josephine

I checked the ice at Lake Josephine (between 694 & 36 on Lexington) today from the landing on the NE corner. There were several fishing holes drilled and two portable houses out there. The ice was around 5 inches.

Local Ice

I stopped by White Bear Lake this afternoon. Ramsey Beach had a sample hole drilled about 20 yards from shore at the boat landing. The ice was just under 4 inches, but was nice and smooth under the light snow... a very skateable surface :) . I would expect the channel to be thinner. I also stopped a...

Old Info

I really like the way this site works. Well done guys!!! :D

Are there any plans to pull in the old text chunks of Knowledge, Chat Archives, and Stories? No big rush, but there was some good stuff in there.

Again... Wow! I really like what you've done.
