Blowing at the Bear

steady 15-ish at the Bear right now. It's been blowing all morning. Ramsey works, or Bellaire will probably be even better - since the wind is fairly east and may get more so.

I'll DVR it, but I'm not sure I can extract it from my Dish DVR. I've been wanting to try, though - and it has a hookup for USB media. :-)

"Red Bull: Minnesota Kite Champ." in HD?

I was trolling through HD channels this morning, and noticed that at 9:30pm tonight the "Red Bull: Minnesota Kite Champ." is on RUSH HD.

Anybody know what this is? Is it the original Kitefreeze, and was it shot in HD?? The channel usually shows HD shows only.

Yeah - I remember seeing even the pros snap a lot of fins trying to hit the slot.

SPI was definitely fun, but Hatteras rocks! Even with the regular wetsuit use, Hatteras easily makes up for it in other areas. The better waves and possibly better wind are nice... It's probably a coin-flip between SPI and Hatteras. If you don't mind the cold, Hatteras might take the lead. :-) Say &...

Just got back from Padre late last night. What a riot. The whole trip rocked. For the two days I didn't ride (no wind), Teran was nice enough to loan me a surfboard. Last Friday was ideal, with 6-8 waves and SSE winds in the 20's at the Jetties. The waves were smooth and fun. Judd the destroyer was ...

It was great the one time I rode it. The other time in the waves (last Sunday) was actually too big for it (didn't want to jibe in gnarly conditions) and today was perfect mutant conditions (staying upwind at the Jetties in 6-8ft waves). I should have ridden it more, but I'm so particular to mutant-...

I hate to say that the whole is pretty much a BS debate. It truly revolves around conditions. If you are out in the surf and there are waves to be ridden, most any rider with reasonable skill is going to try and ride them - regardless of the board type. You merely have to catch a wave where you coul...

It's been a crazy several days. I'm just stoked (and lucky) that Judd miraculously found my board a mile or two from where I lost it! Judd's kite was shredded from the drop in the surf. Believe it or not, a guy down here thinks he can repair it. There were 4 major rips over seams... we'll see. The n...

Dude - Last I had heard, they weren't coming down. I totally ran into them out of the blue. Pulled into the Flats for an afternoon session, parked, rigged, and there was Dav staring me in the face. Randy was on the water. I had parked right behind them and didn't recognize the van! Looking forward t...

Greetings from SPI! It's: Northeast winds 15 to 20 knots. Seas 6 to 8 feet. Just did my first downwinder to the jetties - awesome! Totally fun. I bought a wetsuit top just because it's a little cool and for this weekend's forecast. Basically, a 2mm rash guard. Definitely won't need any more rubber t...

One again, the wisdom of Randy Johnson rings true:

"Dress for the swim in, not the ride out."

(On that note, a general rule is that April is drysuit/steamer season. May and beyond is wetsuit season. Fall is more variable.)

Additionally, just in case you're inclined to ignore the self-imposed ban: As one of the few kiters who have ridden Calhoun back in ye olden days, I can tell you this for sure - Calhoun pretty much stinks for water kiting. Fun for windsurfing, yes. Not so good for kiting... Gusty enough with short e...

Geez - we were just out there on Sunday... Looking through ice-fishing holes and such, there was clearly 1-2 feet of ice in most places.

It's amazing how fast it goes with just a few days of warm weather and rain. :-)

John and I were the only ones zooming around on Sunday. What a blast. However, the ice was so rough it broke my skis! I de-laminated one ski and got a core shot on another. Not sure how the core shot happened - must have hit some ice-fisherman trash (of which there were bits and pieces scattered abo...

It was most definitely the last session of the year on the Bear. I drove by the lake today, and it's looking much more sketchy getting off shore, even though there's decent ice out a ways. After my sessions yesterday, I drove by Matoska park where John Z. launched and saw him coming towards shore. i...
