Re: Crossing Times

Wow! Awesome race everyone! I knew it was going to be close, but that was really intense. Todd, Dan and I are within 16 seconds of each other in an hour-long race. Feels like any one of use could have taken it. It came down to minuscule mistakes. Andy, Steve and Jess were also within very small time...

Clear Lake, IA is looking good. There's a line of storms moving in, but it should move out by noon.

Re: Beta testers wanted

I had to remove the text email and phone number from the original post to avoid spam in the feed. If you go to the site, we now have a form that will give you the same information after you register. You can opt to receive new updates as text messages on your phone when that feature becomes availabl...

Beta testers wanted

We are developing a system that would let folks report conditions from the beach. You could email, text or even call in. It will try to transcribe the and post it on a test web page. ka.png Anything you send will then appear on this page: http://bit.ly/KsFWwi With this weekend's winds, you can repor...

Re: looks like it was built out of a slingshot kite

He said that he used a 2004 Slingshot Fuel, 17m. http://www.humanbirdwings.net/ If it did indeed work, that would be quite an impressive feat! Looking at the video, the wings stay very flat on the upstroke, which would hinder the lift upon take off. A way to get around that is to flex each wing a bi...

Re: Lake of the Woods snowkite trip 2012

Awesome trip! The shots with the Northern Lights and the tents were great. It's funny to watch the GPS trail from the kiting days and the snowmobile days. One of them is a lot straighter. btw, how did you guys get off of Oak island?

Here are some nerd stats. First, the finishing time, by category (Ski or Snowboard). The skiers finished ahead of the snowboarders by about 10 minutes on average. crossing_boxplot.png Second, if we group finishers by time, most skiers finished between 30-35 minutes and most snowboarders finished bet...

Interesting. NOAA has a negative bias, so whatever it says for wind speed forecast, it will probably be windier.

Re: Left my Slingshot RPM Bag at Waconia

Jason,

I don't have your bag, but I have a bag from a 2009 RPM that I trashed in the surf a couple of years ago. If you want it, send me your details and we can arrange a time and place for you to pick it up.

SPI Session with GoPro Hero2 at 120fps

With the conditions outside, I finally had some time to throw together some footage from SPI last November. Had a great session on the North Flats followed by a down winder on the surf side with a GoPro Hero2 that Mike let me borrow. I wanted to check out the slow motion capabilities of the camera, ...

Welcome! Great to see new people picking up the sport. Make sure to watch out for thin ice this year and sometimes, the conditions are worth the drive. Keep watching the forums. People tend to post where they're going and you can join in. Hope to see you soon on the lakes.

That was intense, Marc. Great thinking about making a safe environment first, then taking care of the victim. It was really lucky that you were CPR trained. You most certainly saved his life. I would encourage everyone to know CPR. The Red Cross has their downloadable materials here: http://www.redc...

Re: Chicken Loop Rope

Nylon degrades with exposure to UV in sunlight, so I would not use it. As pointed out by Jason, West Marine has some really nice and cheap braided lines (made of Dyneema maybe?) that I used to repair chicken loop lines before. Bring your old chicken loop line. It makes it easier to find a replacemen...

Awesome! In August/September with the S.E. trade winds pushing through, there are really nice waves setting up. Here's a map to the spot. You can actually see the nice clean sets from the satellite pic. http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=211840386369955262628.0004ae0552d8c703a0c44&msa=0&ll=...

Re: How to scout kiting spots

This looks right for Lake Winnie. You can launch out of that boat access. If I remember well (it was back in 2007), there's also another break in the trees around that loop. Nathan, Matt and I rode there on a West wind and the sand bar extends pretty far from that little peninsula. Overall, a pretty...
