Re: Mille lacs challenge/crossing

Thanks Alfie for your accurate response. Kiters have joined us for this September classic since 2001 and several campaigned to be included in racing across the lake. The sport was still new and lacking many of the safety developments we now have, so it took a while to accommodate kiters within the C...

Mille Lacs Challenge & Great Lakes Kona Cup

Mille Lacs has always been synonymous with the word Challenge. Anyone who tests the winds and big water of Mille Lacs can relate to that word. The Mille Lacs Crossing provided that challenge for 28 years. Now we offer the chance to test and really develop skills by just trying to reach a mark before...

Tuesday's on Calhoun-finally some wind!

After three straight Tuesdays of virtually no wind, this forecast helps redeem. The Fleet 8 trailer will be there with a half dozen Konas. While our primary goal is to offer developmental support to entry-level windsurfers, this season we are also trying to provide tuning and conditioning for those ...

Final Updates for the Kite Crossing

We have SNOW! The most we have ever gained in the week before the event. It may complicate and slow site preparation on Friday, but we will post any updates as soon as we can. At the present, we plan to use the Garrison Sports access that we have used in the past. We hope to have the access and road...

Re: Kite Crossing Update

Thanks for the update, Mike. We blocked off the remaining rooms, so anyone contacting the Garrison Inn for reservations, tell them you are with the Kite Crossing. Twin Pines has rooms left and you can check them out at http://www.twinpinesmillelacs.com/

Re: Kite Crossing Update

The early ice off of Garrison Beach is over 18 inches deep and has been driven on most of the season. The ice that formed after mid-January is inconsistent beyond 8 inches and will be limited to snowmobiles for course management and rescue. In addition, there are no bridges over the crack. We will t...

Re: Course Boards and Races

Thanks for this post. I served on Paul Heineken's RC boat at the first Kite Worlds in San Francisco several years ago. Being his father, he quickly focused my attention to Johnny who did ended up second, only months after he started kiteboard racing. I have tried to follow his career and your video ...

Kite Crossing Update

The 8th annual Kite Crossing is still on and will be held over the weekend of March 2-4. This absurd winter definitely threatened the future of this event as well as others. We had open water on Mille Lacs going into the middle of January. Since then, we have secured enough ice to maintain safety/re...

Mille Lacs Challenge & Great Lakes Kona Cup

Last September, The Challenge replaced The Crossing after an incredible, 28-year run. The focus switched from one BIG race to a full weekend of racing for both windsurfers and kiters. Racing provided the foundation that helped make windsurfing the fastest growing sport in the world. Mille Lacs must ...

Tuesday on Calhoun rescheduled

We have had four successful Tuesdays on Calhoun. Mother Nature limited attendance on the first and third week, but we had six racers on Week 2 and last Tuesday. The success of Kona one-design racing is being documented. Also, the Fleet 8 trailer made its debut last Tuesday. This Tuesday has been res...

Re: Garrison-Sat.

Garrison Play Days hosted by the Garrison Commercial Club is this weekend. We are doing windsurfing demos/activities for the first time as part of Play Days. If we do race, it will probably be a figure-8 course just off the beach. We are scheduled for 10:30, but will probably start a bit later.

Re: Kona Racing on Calhoun

Our goal is to start racing by 6:00, so we would like to have everyone there by 5:30. Tomorrow has wind forecasted from the northwest, so we will probably be meeting at the south beach. For final updates, call 612-508-8083 3:00 or after. As far as Kona equipment, we are fairly covered with the sail ...

Konas at the gathering

We will have the Fleet 8 Konas at the gathering on Saturday. It may be a perfect opportunity for any windsurfers, past or present, to test out the hottest one-design board since the original Windsurfer that built our sport. We should be easy to find. Please feel free to walk up and chat, and/or carr...

Re: the new guy

Welcome to windsurfing in Minnesota. Fleet 8, the local and state windsurfing association for windsurfing has a strong entry-level program. Tuesdays on Calhoun is our most ready program, now in its fifth year. We meet at Lake Calhoun on Tuesdays when conditions are adequate, or we come back on Thurs...

Fire a note off to Fleet-8@juno.com to get us updated. This is our fifth year for Tuesdays on Calhoun and and the current plan is to meet on Tuesday if co...

Re: Crossing?

Definitely a great weekend, but like the past few years, the credit has go to those who made the trip. Wind forecasts the week before had never been more inconsistent. Friday’s winds definitely peaked shortly after noon when we were trying to setup the registration tent. Fortunately, we managed to c...

Re: Registration info for the Kite Crossing

The Garrison Inn has had a two-night minimum for the past few weekends due to special events. We are fortunate that they don't consider us a special event, so we don't have a two-night minimum or the higher rate. We certainly hope that the majority of the rooms are booked for both nights.
