No snow

If anyone is interested... There still is no snow below an elevation of about 400 feet above lake level near Lake Superior. If still feels like fall by the water - we aren't shut down yet!

I lived in Houghton MI for a while (in the UP) - I never tried it, but sailing on the lake at portage entry on the west side of the Kewanaw always looked aysome. The forcasted wind posted above hits the shore side-on shore at about a 45 degree angle. Plus - there is a angled ship canal with break wa...

Saw Dave and Eric out there - by they time they hit the water the wind was dropping fast. Eric, you're right. Always rig bigger than you expect if you are sticking to the inside. The air flow tends to rise up and over park point just outside of the shore break. I almost always use a 5.2 even to abou...

No - the wind on my anemometer is 40 with gust to 50. Nov 2001 was 50 with gust to 70. - the waves are big because of the fetch - its blowing all the way down the lake.. I would NOT recommend Lester as you are dead if you have trouble.. On the point, one wave and your back on the beach.. I haven't s...

.........Ben, sorry bud, I have to admit my arm is in a sling and I can't play today.. If you guys from the TC come up, call me if you want an update. I'm looking out my office window at the lake. (watching the waves break over the end of the pier)... remember - you can do the bay at sky harbor.. (C...

Its raining by the lake - not snowing. No snow on the ground.. For you guys that go out, STAY WITHIN 200 FEET OF SHORE!!!!! The waves are big and deadly - there is not reason go out further.. Its like a drag stip with mush waves about 100 feet apart, perfectly flat water, and 40 knots of wind. Somet...

on the water, the air will be 40ish.. Just called sky harbor and it was already gusting to 27 - the waves are already decent.. Check out the experimental for tomorrow. You may want to come up just to watch the lake.. If it gets too crazy, we can always bail and sail at Sky Harbor (where the signs sa...

right on! I tried to check temps on Superior a second ago - looks like still near 50 degrees.. Forcast for Tuesday offshore is gales to 35 knots. Wave 9 to 11 feet. On the water with that much wind, the air temp will stay above freezing. If it happens, I'll be in the water on Park Point tomorrow. No...

I though our fall sailing was just getting started..

For grip, I used "chicken grit" in a layer of epoxy resin. nothing like small gravel glassed onto your board for non-slip. Doesn't matter how much snow gets on my board, I have NEVER SLIPPED. Just don't fall an the damn thing..... On that jumping thing - next thing you know, they'll sugges...

I've tried the tie rods before. I would not recommend them. For one thing, they lower your ground clearance and the first time you hit an ice chuck, they get bent - end of tie rod. I've found that the toe-in doesn't seem to hurt that much. They tend to track fairly well on their own. On our boards w...

Dave -

I live on Park Point and I saw no sign of that forcast... You didn't miss a thing. The most we had was maybe 10 knots all weekend.. North DOES work in Port Wing, but north also generally means NE at park point. Actually, N all the way to SE usually means NE on park point...

Chris: I was just kicking myself for not making it back into town on time. By the time I got back to town, Jon was comming off the water. I rigged and sailed until after dark.. I got a few rides, but nothing like Port Wing. Jon and I both figured that a wind at 230 to 270 would not have been good th...

Ben - we should have done it last night. I think it would have been good. You can't go by any of the winds you read around Duluth, sometimes you can use Devils Island as a reference. Bill S. - Port Wing is only about another 10 miles east of the brule river mouth. Keep an eye on those big NW forcast...

Port Wing

Marine forcast for Superior is saying NW gales to 35 kts for tonight and tomorrow, then diminishing. This makes for classic Port Wing Sailing. If it happens, the east end of the beach at the "yacht club" in Port Wing is the place to be. Its about 40 miles from Duluth on WI highway 13. With...

I'm looking out at the lake from my office in canal park and I don't see a lot of action right now. SW at 15 to 25 sounds nice. Most people sail in the bay from the boat ramp at the end of park point. I personally think its better sailing at my house. 39th and Minnesota Avenue. The street end is pub...

I should explain mayself.. I am a non-smoker and really like the no smoking in resturant thing - but they now say no smoking in parks too which I think is going too far. The beach is technically park so they COULD enforce it there too. All the other regs they have come up with are park enforcement s...

There were about 10 people pulled out of the lake on Sunday. Everyone was saying how unusual the "rip" was. The only thing unusual was the number of people in the water that didn't know what they are getting themselves into. The "rip" is pretty much a function of the wave size an...
